Taroko Gorge is an exceptionally beautiful, narrow ravine created by a river which has cut through mountains of solid marble and granite. A road carved into sheer walls of rock snakes its way past forested peaks and cliffs towering thousands of feet above it, while hundreds of feet below a river roars past gigantic marble boulders. Here and there, pavilions, pagodas, or temples cling to mist-clad mountainsides; elsewhere, waterfalls gush from crevices in the steep cliffs..

Hualien is more than just a starting point for tours to Taroko, however. Artisans take advantage of the area's vast marble deposits to craft amazing range of products, from inexpensive hand-carved animal figures and chess sets to kitchen utensils and furniture, available in hundreds of shops.

Hualien is also popular for performances of dance and song by the island's aborigine maidens. Nearly 80,000 aborigines reside in the area, most from the Ami tribe. In this village, you can see Ami tribe's dance and songs.
