| If a foreigner resident in Japan wishes to go abroad temporarily and then
return to Japan, it is not necessary to apply for a new visa upon re-entry
into Japan if he or she obtains a Re-entry Permit before departure. There
are two types of Re-entry Permits-one that is valid for a single use and
one for multiple re-entry. The permit is valid for up to three years (or
up to four years for people who have been granted Special Permanent Residence).
If for some reason you are unable to return to Japan within the valid period,
you may be able to apply for an extension of the permit at the Japanese
Consulate Office in the country of your stay. |

| You can apply for Re-entry Permits to the bureau listed below for each
region you are resident in. As a rule, application for the Re-entry Permit
is supposed to be done by the applicant him/herself. However, if the applicant
is under 16 years old, or the applicant is unable to visit the Immigration
Office for the inevitable reasons such as desease or something, the spouse
or the relative can apply in behalf of the applicant. In that case, you
will need to inquire the Immigration Information Office you will apply
to if there is any additional documents or something required on application. |
